What is NLP?

NLP (Neuro-Linguistic programming) is a method of personal development - a tool for improving performance and also a collection of insights and methods that can enable you to improve your communication with yourself and others. It was founded by Dr. John Grinder and Richard Bandler in the 1970's.

NLP is a simple yet powerful approach to personal and professional development much used in business and sales arenas today. It is based on the study of successful human performance in which the methods of very effective people are studied.

NLP explores the relationship between how we think (neuro), how we communicate both verbally and non-verbally (linguistic) and our patterns of behaviour and emotion (programmes).

At the heart of NLP is a wide range of methods and models for understanding how people think, behave and change. It offers a flexible approach which brings about positive, fast change in individuals and organisations and empowers them to adapt to an ever-shifting world. The purpose of NLP is to study, describe and transfer models of human excellence. (Modelling).

I use some NLP techniques in my practice as a supplement to Cognitive Behavioural Therapy as I have found that certain NLP methods complement CBT very effectively.
